Chimayo

Chimayo is a small settlement north of Santa Fe built around a church. This church is famous for the many "miracles" that have occured here. As a result, the central part of this area is filled with stores that sell food and souvenirs to the tourists/pilgrims.

From Wikipedia we have the following description of the place.

Chimayó is a census-designated place (CDP)[1] in Rio Arriba and Santa Fe counties in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The name is derived from a Tewa name for a local landmark, the hill of Tsi Mayoh.[2][3] The town is unincorporated and includes many neighborhoods, called plazas or placitas, each with its own name, including El Potrero de Chimayó (the plaza near Chimayó's communal pasture) and the Plaza del Cerro (plaza by the hill).[2][4][5] The cluster of plazas called Chimayó lies near Santa Cruz, approximately 25 miles north of Santa Fe. The population was 3,177 at the 2010 census.

The religious nature of the place also inspires art. In the instance below, the artwork is an interpretation of the meaning of the chapel itself.

As you see, the image above is a good likeness of the real thing below. This is a typically shaped church for New Mexico. The strong Spanish and Native American influence on these structures produces this sort of adobe covered, twin belfreyed construction that is found everywhere from the most humble place to the cathedral in Santa Fe.

There are also those who are more interested in making money from the tourists than assisting the pilgrims. This stand, when in operation, is here to sell chilé. This is the other reason Chimayo is well known: chilé. The Chimayo chilli is tasty, spicy, and just what you want to flavor up your mexican cooking. That is when you are not using Hatch chilé (from near the town of Hatch, NM) for that purpose.

But there are presentations of art that revere the pilgrim as well. I suspect that everyone who comes here is a bit of both tourists and pilgrim. Just how much of each is in the mix varies greatly.

  1. We enjoyed these interesting and gorgeous photos! Steve, we did not know, that Hungarian Erős Pista emigrated to NM and changed his name to Chimayo Chilli. (just kidding :-))
