In downtown Worcester we visited the Cathedral. Like all the other Anglican churches at the time of our visit, there were memorials out front for the Queen.
Interestingly, Edward Elgar has a memorial just inside the door to the cathedral even though this is an Anglican church and he was a Catholic. We also learn from Wikipedia that
Inoperable colorectal cancer was discovered during an operation on 8 October 1933. He told his consulting doctor, Arthur Thomson, that he had no faith in an afterlife: "I believe there is nothing but complete oblivion."[122] Elgar died on 23 February 1934 at the age of seventy-six and was buried next to his wife at St Wulstan's Roman Catholic Church in Little Malvern.[123]
It probably helps a lot that he was appointed the Master of the King's Music in 1924.
Wikipedia tells us that:
Worcester Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral in Worcester, in Worcestershire, England, situated on a bank overlooking the River Severn. It is the seat of the Bishop of Worcester. Its official name is the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Mary the Virgin, of Worcester. The present cathedral church was built between 1084 and 1504, and represents every style of English architecture from Norman to Perpendicular Gothic. It is famous for its Norman crypt and unique chapter house, its unusual Transitional Gothic bays, its fine woodwork, and its "exquisite" central tower,[1] which is of particularly fine proportions.[1][2] The cathedral contains the tombs of King John and Prince Arthur.
In the south transept stands this imposing statue
Henry Philpott was Bishop of Worcester for thirty years (1860-90) and knew Brock well. His wife had unveiled Brock's statue of Richard Baxter at Kidderminster in 1875 and Philpott had headed the list of subscribers for Brock's Golden Jubilee statue of Queen Victoria. In Worcester. Brock was awarded the commission for a memorial statue of him in 1892, and produced one of his finest works.
As you can see, comparing the next image with the previous one, the styles of construction in the cathedral are all over the place. This rose window and stained glass is really magnificent.
There are many burials in the floor that are marked with such carved ledger stones as you see below.
