Just a little ways north of Eyemouth in Berwickshire, Scotland is the village of Coldingham. Here we find the ruins of a medieval monastery. The church still stands and is a Church of Scotland, the rest of the priory is in ruins around it.
There are some gravestones that, in their emaciated state of erosion, present gaunt figures and disturbing symbols.
Even those with symbols that seem to be lighter in their meaning that a skull and crossbones, there is still something grotesque and organic about the carvings. Mind you, these are really recent markers on the scale of things. The priory dates from 1147 but this markers clearly says 1732.
It seems that the well, with its metal grate to keep the kids and ne'er-do-wells out was at one time inside the priory not outdoors as it is today.
