Even without the animals to spice things up, the region around Nome is an interesting place. Not that there are spectacular things to see or really impressive mountains, but rather that it is place not quite like any other.
As I have noted before, if solitude is what you are after, this is the place to come.
There are lots of rounded hills and a few taller mountains, but nothing really imposing. But if you look for it, you can find rock outcroppings that add some spice to the scenery.
In the distance, the larger mountains stand sentinel, perhaps guarding the inland areas from Russian invasion or maybe as a place to catch what must be titanic winter snows.
In terms of a place to visit in a vehicle, it is an empty place and a little scary. It is very easy to see a road devoid of traffic for significant periods. this makes the thought of a breakdown a bit unnerving. Remember, you also don't see any cell towers os unless you have a satellite phone, you aren't calling for help if a problem arises.
I would also assume that the road become impassable well before the snow starts. It is unclear how much rain is required to turn this unpaved road into a morass.
