Life in a Beautiful but Hard Place

A reminder that life near Nome is often hard and ends in the usual way. This reminder of the musk ox sitting on the snow is a stark sign of the what life is like.

A rock ptarmigan is showing off for us. He lacks the red neck of the willow variety.

Aside from the bushy willows, the only plants growing here are small flowers found close to the ground. The harsh, windy conditions make this nearly the only way to survive.

While the flowers are small and uncomplicated, they are delicate and a refreshing addition to this austere landscape.

Just for comparison with the rock ptarmigan above, here is a willow ptarmigan with his red neck stretched out.
