Dunbar, Scotland

Our next trip was to Dunbar, Scotland. This turns out to be an interesting place to visit. Across the street from our pet sit, is a golf course (naturally, we're in Scotland) and on the other side of it is the Firth of Forth. Out behind the clubhouse is a stone fence between us and Bass Rock. The flowers add just the right decorations.

As you might expect, weather changes here pretty fast, so after a breakfast at the clubhouse with our doggie charge in tow, the clouds lifted and we headed out for a little exploration. The first stop is ruins of Dunbar Castle. This portion is decorated with an elegant heron.

It is all ruins today. It was slighted (damaged to make it useless) in 1567. It seems to have been used as a prison as often as a fort. In 678, Saint Wilfrid was imprisoned here when Ecgfrith of Northumbria got mad at him.

Then in 1562, Mary, Queen of Scots spent some time here. She came back in 1565 to confront here enemies.

Today, the remains stand as a reminder of the many visitors: James IV, James Stewart, the battles during the reformation and, lastly, Mary.
