Eger is a city of churches, many of which we did not visit. It was a warm, crowded day and we ran out of steam pretty quickly. But this unusual one caught my eye.
The Church of Saint-Bernard-et-Saint-François-de-Borgia is part of the Cistercian high school that is on the same grounds. I do not know how a French catholic church came to be here, no doubt there is a complicated history to this question, but here it is.
What makes this place so striking are the pure while statues and decorations. The altar is particularly interesting with a collection of white statues scattered about the altarpiece. I got the feeling that there were these ghostly folks crawling about getting on with the spiritual housekeeping. You can also see that the ceiling colors are not in the usual pallett seen in most churches in Hungary.
Yet it is ornate and finely crafted.
There seems to be a quite nice pipe organ in the rear loft. Too bad I did not get to hear it. There is also lots of intricate detail to be seen in the ceiling towards this end of the church.
Church ceilings are always intricately painted. The problem is that they are so far away without anyway to get closer. I'm sure that there are those to whom just knowing that this beauty is above this enough. I, however, would like to be able to get closer and actually see it.
