A Night at the Opera

The time tested method for a start to an evening at the opera is by visiting the restaurant next door for a slice of dobos torte. This delightful Hungarian cake is quite addictive.

We visited the opera house on our previous visit to Budapest but I don't believe I posted the images. Partly that is because the building was undergoing extensive renovations at the time and much was a mess or closed off. This time, the glorious palace to the arts is fully open and looking quite amazing. Below is the stairs as we entered.

Once inside the auditorium, we could see the enormous chandelier in the center of the ceiling and the colorful painting that surrounds it.

The proscenium is nearly all covered in gold. Fortunately, with the lights down for the performance, this extravagant decoration does not distract from the show.

Facing away from the stage and using the panorama option on my cell phone, I was able to get a view of the entire seating section. In the center is the royal box originally intended for the emperor. Must have been nice to be the emperor, right?
