At the very top of the volcano we find a collection of observatories, which we mere mortals are not allowed to drive to, and vistas that can be a bit difficult to comprehend. On the slope above we look along a field of broken lava to abrupt change is slope beyond which appears only sky and ocean. Like one of the modern "infinity pools" one finds on hotel roofs, this "infinity field" on top of Maui is equally unsettling.
One of the treasures of this location and altitude are the silverswords. These hearty plants grow well in the small garden set aside here to cultivate them. They are native to this location.
These plants can get quite large.
But the crater is the place that always is overwhelming. Here we see a portion of a trail into the the crater that with it's yellow color resembles a lightning stroke in the ground.
What I love is the subtle, almost watercolor-like variations in the colors of the cones scattered about the crater. Were I a lyric geologist, I could paint you a picture in words and ideas to rival the colors you see with your eyes to make this more impressive. But, alas, I'm not up to that task. Any excerpt from a web description would pale in comparison to the view. So, just enjoy.
