More of the Crater at Haleakala

This place must certainly inform the artists who imagine scenes on other worlds. For, in my travels, few places have rivaled the other worldliness of these vistas.

There is something here that reminds me of a 1950's science fiction movie containing robots built with vacuum tubes and rockets that land vertically on their tails without the slightest effort.

Perhaps in a few millennia, all this area will be covered with suitable plants that drift in from across the seas and these wonderful colors will be hidden. Or perhaps by that time, human life on the island will have overwhelmed the last refuge of nature and this crater will be filled with condos. whatever the future holds, there is nothing that I can imagine could happen to improve upon its current state.

More likely, in a thousand years or two, this volcano will erupt again (or one very close to to here) and all this will go away just as surely as if covered by the works of men and women. Nothing is permanent.
