Black Crowned Night Heron

About a 15 minute drive north of Kihei where we were staying, is the Kealia Coastal Boardwalk. This is an elevated boardwalk just off the beach and along the edge of a wetlands. The first bird I came across was another of the black crowned night heron. These guys like to pose for the camera.

Sitting here seemingly hunched over waiting for food to appear, he is quite oblivious to my presence (some 20-30 feet away).

The backlighting give us a good look at his chin feathers and just a glimpse of the breeding plumage hanging down the center of his back.

This pose allows you see both chin feathers and breeding feathers much better. Perhaps he is not looking for food but rather a mate. Maybe posing is part of the annual dance for mates?
