Sometimes people like to plant flowers at the base of a tree to add a little interest to the scene. In this case, there happen to still be a few late season flower left to add their grace and color.
But other times, nature adds the plantings. These are often much more fun to photograph and explore. In this case, it is clear that something has been nibbling on the fungus. My guess is that it was a rabbit that feasted here. There are plenty of this around.
At this scale, the bits of the evergreen leaves that fall to the ground seem to be logs and the half eaten fungus resembles the USS Enterprise without the saucer section.
Here, like a giant umbrella rising from the rainforest floor, we have a mushroom towering over mosses.
