St. James Churchyard in Shere

There is a small town in Surrey that is billed as an ancient place and indeed it it filled with ridiculously narrow streets, quaint pubs, thatched roofs, and this small church that dates from the 11th century.

It turns out that this church was in the midsts of a wedding. Thus, we could not go inside. Perhaps on another visit. What we could do, however, was visit the cemetery that surrounds the church. While there are stones here that are interesting, the day wa a dull gray and there is little to make any of the photos stand out.

One thing that did grab my eye was this back door on the church that I took while the guests sang a hymn.

Naturally, I was not alone here and our pet was vigilant among the stones making sure that all was safe.

The stones we could read all seemed to be Victorian or later. The ones we could not read...well, we couldn't read them. This one, for example, is pretty (although perhaps, not completely) indecipherable.

What I find interesting about the markers are the colors from the lichens, mosses, and the stones themselves.
