A Bit of B&W Fun

Seems like a good time to revisit a few recent images and explore them in monochrome. I particularly like the Watercress Line steam engine. The shiny metal surfaces contrast with the diffuse steam to make a vaguely abstract view of the train.

This unusual gravestone at Brookwood is a perfect choice for conversion. I am always attracted to stone carved to look like cloth. When done well, it is, for me, the ultimate visual oxymoron.

The textures in this detail of the Waverley Abbey ruins make a pleasing image. Some of the stones appear to have the tool marks left by ancient hands. This is very evocative and gives a sense history that you can't get the same way from other perspectives or in color.

And, of course, there is the crypt at the Winchester Cathedral. The loneliness of the figure standing in the water is haunting. Monochrome capture the isolation and symmetries of the arches in a way that color distracts from.
