Whitehall

Although Whitehall is a street in Westminster that connects Trafalgar to Parliament Square, it also a metonym for civil service and government. Perhaps this is because the area is filled with white stone buildings that are themselve filled with government offices.

One of the striking statues we walked past honors the Gurkhas, the Nepalese soldiers who fought alongside the British in India.

No walk along Whitehall would be complete with a stop to photograph a mounted horse guard.

And the mighty steed who has been trained to ignore nearly everything and everyone.

Bracketed by newer structures, The Old Shades stands as a reminder of times gone by in this old part of the city.

Just at the corner of Trafalgar where it joins the Mall, stands the Admiralty Arch. I cut off the bottom of the arch since it is under refurbishment and the scaffolding really didn't add to the view.

From the Mall, we walked to the Horse Guards Parade Grounds where we could see the London Eye making a halo over the Household Division Charity building.

As viewed from the Mall, on the left side is the old Admiralty building.

But always, there is a side street with a pub. Finally a place to rest.
