Glasgow Cathedral Church Yard

Our first stop on the bus was the Glasgow Cathedral. Since we arrived a few minutes early, we toured about the outside of the church and had a look about the graves in the churchyard.

One of the interesting things here are the mossy stones laid in the ground. Apparently, the lettering is carved in the stone and filled with raised lead characters. As the acidic rain etches away the lead, the stone is left with relatively large spaces that fill with dirt and, eventually, moss. this gives rise to the interesting phenomena of grave markers lettered in moss. I found it quite beautiful in the low morning light.

Around the perimeter of the yard we find the remains of people who had more money in life. This physician has a quite impressive memorial.

This marker is damaged by the acidic rain but the marble can still be quite clearly read. I found it interesting that this fellow claimed this as "his property". Who says you can't take it with you?

This view across the front of the Cathedral shows who closely other larges buildings are to the church. No space is wasted in this city.

Across the highway behind the cathedral isa hill on which the Glasgow Necropolis lies. From there, we see this view of the Cathedral. Views of this cemetery coming soon.
