A Little Bit of Glasgow

After we finished our pet sit in London, we boarded the train at Euston Station and headed north to Glasgow for a few days. Our hotel was right in the central train station making the entire process most convenient. If any one should wonder why the US need a respectable passenger train system, this is it: journey from city-center to city-center and stay within walking distance to everything you need.

Glasgow is a city on the rebound. It has been a shipbuilding center and a textile center and is now it is remaking itself as a shopping destination. The architecture is more eclectic than Edinburgh, the streets are more walkable than London, and the shopping is pretty impressive. Buchanan Street is a pedestrian mall filled with shops of all sorts.

One of the places on this street is a surprisingly decorated building that is a shopping mall.

As you see below, the building range from modern glass to brick and domes. The city is filled with people working, laughing, and just enjoying being in the city.

This building below is a really great piece of 19th century architecture.

Everywhere you look is an interesting building and a spire. This city is just chock-a-block with churches, sometimes more than one in a block.

This one is not a church although it was likely built as one. Nowadays it is a high-end shop of some sort.

This clothing store has windows filled with old sewing machines. Not entirely sure why, but it does attract attention.

As our walk draws to a close, we return again to the train station/hotel. The gates on the station are quite intricate, though we never saw them closed.
