Parroquia El Salvador, Nerja

About 20 minutes or so from us is the costal town of Nerja. Not far from the sea is the small but impressive parish church of El Salvador.

This church is clearly dedicated to Jesus and Mary.

There is very little iconography that isn't one or the other (or both) of them.

One of the interesting things about visiting churches around the world is to see the different styles in which they are decorated. The many depictions of Jesus here with what I assume is some sort of holy glow from the head tend to look like he is shooting fireworks from his head.

On the other hand, Mary always has her halo surrounding her crown. I also noticed that the color of her robes change as you progress through the stations of the cross. They start blue, move through green, and end at black. I suppose this must be related to the mood as she moves from birth to death of Jesus. At the end is of the story (on earth) is Mary crying over the body of Jesus.

By the door is a small chapel that seems to represent Jesus and Mary in heaven with all glory restored and everyone in white and blue.

Outside we see that the church is a modest affair. Yet, the ubiquitous white building is striking against the deep blue sky.
