The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Garden
There is a large botanical garden in Hobart that is very nice. Even though we are visiting in winter, there is plenty to see. We only walked a portion of it on this visit.
The special place in the garden is the Subantarctic Plant House. This is a building cooled to the temperatures of Macquarie Island, a part of Tasmania about 1500 km closer to Antarctica than Hobart. This place is only inhabited by plants and a few of the antarctic animals (birds, seals, Walrus, etc.). One of the more interesting plants in this collection is the one shown below. It is apparently high in vitamin C and was harvested and cooked by the whalers to prevent scurvy.
Back in the unairconditioned world, we found jade in bloom.
We visited a hot house (which really wasn't very hot at all) filled with blooming orchids. Her are just a few of the bewildering variety of flowers in this building. If this is winter, I can hardly imagine what summer will bring.
Back outside again to the Japanese gardens with the iconic pool and white bridge.
Even outside, ther were flowers blooming in mid-winter. This is a strange place.
