Ballarat CBD

Naturally, before we left Ballarat, we had to visit the city center. Although we've never watched the show, we're told that the Doctor Blake Mysteries (available in the US on Netflix) is filmed largely along Lydiard Street to take advantage of many fine Victorian buildings that remain from the gold rush days. It seemed fun to visit and get some images for our friends who know this show so everyone can see what it really looks like.

There is a large avenue through the center of town, the Sturt Highway. This road is extra wide and the cross streets downtown, such as Lydiard are also pretty wide as well. It gives the city the feeling that it was designed by Brigham Young on steroids.

Many of the buildings retain their fancy exterior awnings.

There are even doors that are in very good shape.

The Hotel George is the place we had a cuppa on our previous visit.

The Regent Theater is on down the block headed out of town about a block.

Back on Sturt highway is a statue of Queen Victoria, being all regal and imposing.

When you stand where see seems to be looking at you, she is indeed kinda scary.

And we say farewell with a look at the memorial to the WWI soldiers from Ballarat.

Since we are now only an hour away, we'll be back so stay tuned for more Ballarat fun.
