Ballarat Old Cemetery

After a restful evening in Ballarat, we decided to see a bit of town before we left. Naturally, our first stop was the Old Cemetery.

While the stones here are not particolored as many in Tasmania are, it nevertheless has some interesting markers.

Of course, there are stones that detail the losses that were all too common for the time.

Here we saw more of the Victorian symbolism that represent the sentiments of the 19th century.

Even when the deceased is not a child, they are often young people struggling ina hard world.

Lots of iron fences here to keep the souls apart. Even in death, good fences make good neighbors apparently

So many of these nice markers are erected to remember people who had, by our standards, very short lives.

Often we find gravesites where the stone is not in good shape and has fallen or, perhaps, taken down to avoid a fall, and things are less well ordered.

And no big cemetery would be complete without statue of sorry to express the feelings of the family.
