Water Flows Downhill

The Skykomish river flows near the highway in sections of the route and there is a place to stop and have a look near the town of Index. Since there was a dab of sunlight peeking through the trees and around the rocks, this seemed like a good place to make a few long exposures.

As you can see above, there is a lot of green in the water. I suppose this is partly due to the silt lead the stream is carrying and partly due to the reflected light of the trees. Whatever the source, it give the river a delicate pastel color.

When we include the shiny, stationary stones along side the rushing river, we get a kind of watercolor (no pun intended) effect that really gives the scene some life.

The eddies at the edge and the great rush in the center gives an interesting view. I find that the image below gives a tangible meaning of the colloquial phrases of "mainstream" and "fringe" as applied to society. In the main portion of the stream in its rush to get to the destination, there is no time for anything for but moving forward. How ever on the fringes we see a more delicate and less intentional pattern. Just as we see in society, we see in the flow of water when viewed through the right time steps. Perhaps we'd see our lives and that of the world around us more clearly if we blurred out the daily rush and focus on the fixed points and the eddies around us a little more.
