As dawn approaches, the colors become more distinct.
It was an interesting scene. Most of the sky was covered in low clouds, but the eastern sky was not completely covered so some color and light were sneaking in.
It is quite clear why the native Americans migrated in and out of the canyon each year. Of course there is water and the bottom, but also it is warmer down there. I mean it is 18F where I standing. Even 5 or 10 degrees would make all the difference in how hard life would be.
It is a place filled with grand features and shapes. We are all so familiar with the scenes we seen in movies where planes or drones fly over a landscape and make it feel as if you could reach out to touch it. That is how felt being on the rim. Features such as the slot cut in the rock by the tributary flowing toward the camera don't feel a mile or more away. Even in the cold, I felt as if I could simply walk over and touch it.
But this illusion is quickly dispelled when you notice that there are people headed into the canyon. If you look carefully in the image below, you will see a collection of people in yellow safety jackets near the edge of a plateau as they descend into the canyon. This really changes the perceived scale. Now it looks enormous.
