Gellért Gyógyfürdő és Uszoda

Decided to take the plunge. Literally. I went to the Gellert Thermal Bath for a massage and dip in the hot (-ish) mineral bath. As you can image, running about around the pools filled with scantily clad people of all ages and nationalities with a camera would be more than a little creepy. As a result, you only get to see the bits where people are (mostly) fully dressed.

It is a large place with multiple hot pools and a good sized regular swimming pool. I rented a towel and swimming costume from the house and it all went well.

As you can see below, people of all shapes, sizes, ages, and genders come out for a dip. Immersed in the 36 C water of the caldarium up to my neck, I observed that the water was populated by people engaged in conversations, much as you'd see in a bistro. With the strong echo typical of a natatorium, it felt quite like the noise we've encountered in a large restaurant in New York, for example.

But the design and architecture of the building itself was quite interesting.

The entrance is covered by ornate ironwork.

Outside the classical style of statuary on the walls give the place an imposing presence on the street.

The baths sit adjacent to the Gellert Hotel, which itself is a mighty sight. All this sits on the Buda side of the Danube with views across the river to the Central Market and beyond.
