Matthias Church
You're seeing lots of churches from this trip because these Hungarians really know how to build a fine church. It seems that every one is more amazing that the last. This is perhaps the most beautiful of them all,,,the Matthias Church. It was commissioned by King Matthias Corvinus in the 13th century.
The range and intensity of the colors used in decorating this building stagger the mind.
Everywhere you look is another spectacle for the eye. The robin-egg blue in the ceiling is unusual and adds a nice contrast to the yellow portions.
Other portions of the ceiling have more intense colors and stronger designs. The symmetry of the light in the center surrounded by painted designs and gilt statues makes a feast for the eyes.
The view down the ceiling of the nave towards the altar is one that i shall not soon forget.
Here's another view of the altar and quire from one side.
On one side of the church is an balcony that visitors are allowed to use. From this elevated location, I got some broader views of the main floor area.
One image I especially like is this view through these moorish-style openings onto the nave and the far wall.
From the back corner we can see again the full span of the church.
Access to the balcony is via spiral stairs. This is the set for coming down.
The artistry in this church just leaves me gobsmacked. There is something of the moorish in fine, repeated detail exhibited here.
Even the door we leave through is an artistic wonder with the over-the-top hinges.
When you visit Budapest, you really must come to this church. It
really is amazing. I have more photos of other amazing things, I just ran out of energy posting and I fear church fatigue from my audience. Just know that it is even more amazing that I've shown.
