Fiumei úti sírkert - 2

There is a large colonnade in the center of the cemetery and at one end is a high ceilinged dome painted as as shrine to the ones buried below.

Many of the tombs are intended for families and, thus, have a lid that can be lifted off when time comes to add another.

This cemetery has its share of angels in mourning.

This family grave comes with an eternal mourner to watch over those lost.

This fellow has me flummoxed. I cannot tell if he is building, destroying, or simply showing strength.

This grave for Blaha Lujza caught my eye. Not only do the bright flowers (probably left over from All Souls Day) add interest to the gray stone, this name is one that is well known to us. Not for who this woman was, but for the fact that we are constantly taking a bus through the square named for her. She was an actress and singer called the "nation's nightingale." She lived from 1850 to 1926 and to celebrate her 75th birthday, Blaha Lujza ter was named for her.

Below is the grave of Antall József,1932 – 1993, was a Hungarian teacher, librarian, historian, and statesman who served as the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Hungary, holding office from May 1990 until his death in December 1993. He was also the leader of the Hungarian Democratic Forum from 1989 (Wikipedia),

This fellow had a most unusual grave marker. It is two guys with crosses outstretched and two mounted riders, one on each corner. All are covered with a stone sheet expect for a space on one side for an entry and the center of the monument where the grave lies.

Here you can see the whole thing.

The Erkel Theater is where we went to hear Juan Diego Florez. This is the resting place of Erkel Sandor. He lived from 1846 to 1900 and was a composer, conductor and director of the Hungarian State Opera.

There is a section of the cemetery set aside for those killed in the 1956 uprising. These traditional wooden markers we have seen in other cemeteries and they typically include something of importance from the person's life (an airplane propeller, a boat anchor, a plow, etc.). This one simply says 1956.

This appears to the be the family grave site for an entire family killed in October and November 1956.
