St. Mary's Catholic Church
After leaving the shopping district, we headed down toward St. Mary's Catholic Church. Along the way we passed the old mint building. This is the oldest public building in Sydney. Clearly, it is no the mint today but you can tell it is old from the wooden shingle roof.
Soon we come to the church. As you can see, this is a much grander building that nearly all the curches we seen in Australia.
Inside is similarly grand. I must confess that you will find all this interior photos to run the gamut of color palettes. I found it impossible to find a way to correct the color produced by the sodium lights in one part, the fluorescent in another section, and the daylight outside. As a result the corrections are different in different photos and it may be hard to tell these are all the same building.
Nevertheless, it is a grand structure.
This next photo is a composite of 9-10 images. As you can see, there are distortions in the columns that I just couldn't get out. These were taken with the Fuji x100s and it is just not the best camera for this sort of photography.
I'm guessing that is St. Mary praying near the altar.
Aside from the color (and the as-shot colors were just as bad), this is a beautiful aisle.
The nave and choir is similarly impressive.
This is most colorful church I've tried to photograph. You can see below that the various sections of the church come out in a variety of colors somewhat like a church decorated for Christmas.
Finally, we are back to normal colors in the St. James train station. From here, we head home having had a fun day.
By the way, this is the first train station in Australia where we found "Mind the Gap" printed along the platform.
