Sutter's Mill

While Coloma does have a post office, it is missing most of the other trapping of a modern city, such as a grocery or pharmacy.

Next to the post office there is, however, a restaurant (closed this day) for the visitors (not us, obviously). This and the park visitor center were the only concessions available.

The mill was built on the edge of the American River and used a water wheel to drive the saw. This monument is built on the site where the mill stood. It was good a bit hazier here than in Angels Camp because we are closer to the Caldor fire.

I don't know if this is a typical water level for the river or if it is exposing rocks  due to the drought. In any event, it is a pretty place to be.

Back a hundred yards or so from the water, a replica of the mill has been built to show us all what this place looked like. This structure sat out over the water and turned the water wheel. The upstairs housed the saw and the tables that supported the logs being turned into lumber.
