Not far from our B&B in Nevada City is a small, but interesting Catholic Cemetery filled with local history.
Even the broken gravestones are preserved to tell their stories.
Theresa (above) and Bridget (below) both died in their 40's. Most likely this means either disease or accident, not childbirth.
John Mackin, below, lived to the ripe old age of 62. I found it remarkable that the tree so close behind the gravestone has not yet tipped it over. Perhaps the marker has been moved over the years to preserve it.
The fencing around this plot speaks to the age of the place.
This large metal marker for a small boy tells us that the family had money to memorialize their sorrow. I'm not sure, but I think this and other metal markers we've seen in California are made of zinc. This was an inexpensive method of memorializing a loss that started in about 1870.
