At the bottom of the hill from the Alcazaba is a Roman theater built in the 1st century. The walls and proscenium are lost but the tiered seating and stage area remain.
Visiting this site is a study in contrasts. Mostly contrasts in time. In this image we see the modern city making a backdrop for this ancient amphitheater.
In the other direction, the walls of the Alcazaba make a different temporal contrast with over a thousand years between their construction.
The Moors built a castle with utilitarian walls. the Romans built a place of symmetry and grace. The differences are still apparent, even today.
But my favorite scene is in the video below. Here we see buskers entertaining for a bit of money on the promenade near the stage of the theater near the foot of the castle. How much has the world really change in the last 2000 years? Even the instruments played have roots in this distant past.
