Nunhead Cemetery

We made a visit to Nunhead Cemetery leaving Abney Park on our list of unvisited of the Magnificent Seven Cemeteries. This is a place that got away from the caretakers, changed hands a couple times and is now maintained by the Friends of Nunhead Cemetery.

Parts of it are open and park-like while much of the rest is a forest filled with tombstones.

The Anglican chapel has fallen into disrepair. The roof is missing due to a fire.

There is good selection of cemetery art here, but it all damaged in some way. And nearly all of it covered with a green coating of algae.

It is common here to find the markers on the ground and toss about at random.

Here it seems to be the case that the stone container in which the coffin was placed has "floated" to the surface. It looks like someone just got up from the grave and walked away. I suspect that this container was always visible on the ground and the lid simply slid off. Not really sure what happened to the occupant.

Even the fancier markers are in disrepair.

But there are some mausoleums that are in good shape. However, I suspect that this one was not well cared for since it is now empty.  Or, perhaps, the family decided to move the remains elsewhere for re-internment since the whole place was returning to nature.
