Fuente de Piedra
We took a 1.5 hour drive to the small town of Fuente de Piedra (Stone Fountain). Near it is the Laguna where Flamingos live and breed. It is located in a broad plain ringed by mountains.
These birds are pretty far from where we were allowed to be so the images are not great. But this are indeed large birds. When they stretch and flap their wings, you can see that they are not simply pink all over. Rather they have red and black on their wings in a dramatic fashion.
We were at the laguna for a couple hours and never saw a bird fly, but I bet these are impressive animals in the air.
We also saw birds scratching themselves in a gangly, awkward way while standing on one leg.
I really wish we had been able to get closer to them.
But the scenery around us was amazing. We were surrounded by olive groves in every direction.
Below you can see the town of Fuente de Piedra in the distance nd the flamingos in the foreground.
Several places as we drove around the laguna, we saw abandoned haciendas. One of these was close the road so I got out for a walk around it.
Thick stone walls must help keep things cool in the oppressive summers.
The stories these walls could tell...
