As we end our excursion along Artist's Drive, I found a place where it seemed as if gold was just lying on the ground everywhere. Rest assured, it is not gold.
Back down in the valley, we find a place that really seems to be from another planet. This is called the Devil's Golf Course since the surface is so rough that only the Devil himself could manage a golf game here. Yeah, I know the name is a bit of reach, but there it is.
The surface is crusted over with salt over a vast area. It is really hard to walk on...I tried for a short distance to set up this shot...and I shudder to think of falling here. These salt crystals are sharp.
It is foreboding place. In the abstract, there is a character to the images that attracts the eye, but to stand there in person, with the wind in your ears and no place even to sit comfortably for miles, it is not a pleasant place.
Just try to imagine travelling through here with limited water, a horse/mule to feed along with all the people in your family while you try to walk over/around all this salt. In the blazing sun. With no prospect of help if you fall and/or break something.
And what water you can find, in not potable. It is clear why it was named Death Valley.
Everything for as far as you can see, it lethal. But, boy is it beautiful.
