Maughold
After our visit to Maughold, we realized that we missed two of the most important items to see there, so we returned for a quick visit.
The most significant found on the side of the parish cross that now resides inside the church. On one side is a carving of the triskelion that is the symbol the Isle of Man. This is the oldest known such carving in stone on the island.
The other sides of the cross are also interesting, but their designs are not so readily recognisable.
Clearly, someone put much time and devotion into making this stella.
The other bit of significant history here is the WWI memorial. We returned on a very windy day and this monument is located as far from the church as it is possible to be and still be in the cemetery.
Yet the view is worth the climb. An elegant and moving memorial to a great tragedy. Given the small population on this island (even today it is only 84,000), this list is quite long.
