Fossils at Poverty Point
Another place we really had to make another trip to Poverty Point to see the fossils. Unlike our previous trip, there was no rain storm coming at us this time.
Just a nice calm day by the water.
The fossils continue to be captivating.
Some of the shells shapes are quite unusual.
I don't really know why they are black but my best guess is that it is the same reason the surrounding rock is often red: there is iron in the stone and for some reason, it concentrates in portions of the fossils.
Whatever the cause, the dark color make some amazing patterns on the stone near the water's edge.
Some patterns are hard (for me) to tell if they are flora or fauna.
Some suggest that perhaps they are portions of fish scales.
Sprinkled in among the ancient fossils are current creatures. The small creatures in the spiral shells are some sort of snail I think.
