Adventure Bay

Adventure Bay is on the north shore of the southern part of Bruny island, just south of the neck that joins the two parts. It is a beautiful and historic part of the island.

The land surrounding the bay is hilly and very little, if any development has happened to most of it.

In one section, overlooking the bay is a cemetery. Here the graves are not especially old, but there are some interesting ones.

This one tells the tale of a family's loss.

On the beach, we see the forest coming right down to the water's edge. The water still that rich turquoise color even on an overcast day.

In the distance you can see the mainland as well parts of the north section of the island.

Along the shore I found a weathered section of a tree in which the cracks are filled with sand. This makes an interesting, slightly abstract image.

The real fascination of the bay is its history. To be in a spot that you know James Cook stood is pretty thrilling. To look out over the bay and know that, except for the missing ships that he would have seen, you are looking at the same scene he saw is quite arresting. Although the sea continually washes the footprints off the sand, it is exciting to know that Cook's footsteps left a mark that can still be felt (if not physically seen) today.
