Flamingos and Pelicans

I suppose that you can tell which flamingos are well fed by looking. The pink color comes from the carotenoids in the shrimp they eat. The more shrimp, the darker the color.

The chicks are gray to white and don't turn pink until about two years old. And, in case you are wondering, they can live to be 50 years old!

After breakfast, we headed to the beach to look about. Here we found some brown pelicans cruising the shallows looking for fish.

One of the things that I notice in these images that didn't especially make an impression at the time is how unforgiving the ocean looks. Remember, unlike most small islands we visit, there are not near the shore of a larger chunk of land. So, the water gets deep quickly and it is the open ocean after that.
