Birds
About an hour before we reached Tjukayirla Roadhouse, we stopped at the Gnamma Hole. This is a small water hole just off the road. Here we found a flock of Galahs.
Although we've seen these fellows everywhere, this is the first time I could get close enough to really see them. In spite of their noisy behaviour, they are pretty birds. The crest of feathers on their heads gives them the appearance of old ladies coming out of the salon, freshly quaffed.
One of our prizes on the trip was the sighting of the Australian Bustard. Our bird book describes him as a "lordly" bird and with his head raised, he looks the part.
These big birds do fly and some of their relatives are considered to be among the largest flying birds.
We also found a Wedged Tailed Eagle in a tree next to the road. This is a big bird as well.
He did not stay long and was quickly leaving us for more interesting places.
