Moolort Wetlands

Not far from Newstead, between there and Maryborough, is a man-made lake called Cairn Curran. Around this lake are various places to look for birds. The trees that remain in the water make roosts for the birds that live there. Above, we see a Pacific Black Duck and a Little Black Cormorant.

We were also able to find a Red Rumped Parrot having a bit of lunch in the grass near the road.

But mostly what we found was a vast sky over the water and surrounding farmland.

I'm not sure what this pile of dirt is used for, but it is a big one.

The farmland here is expansive and unpopulated. We are no more than 1.5 hours drive from the center of Melbourne, a city of 4.5 million. Yet we drove a road for 45 minutes (may more) and passed two cars. Stop anywhere along the road, turn off the engine, roll down the windows, and listen. What you hear is the wind and the birds. Quite a place.
