By the Sea

Back in October, I joined a photowalk sponsored by the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) to explore the boats moored at Fisherman's Terminal in Seattle. It was a cloudy day with a bit of rain included (surprise!) but it made for an evenly lit shooting day.

These are all working boats so the found items are all utilitarian, not decorative. The images tend to convey a sense of the work done by the men and women who staff them.

As usual, I approach this shoot with an eye for symmetry (or the lack thereof).

Lots of rusty anchors and other boat parts to be seen.

The reflections in the water are often the big attraction. Again, this is part of the symmetry. But it is also a way to distort and reinterpret the items being reflected. The abstract reflection in the water is almost always the best part. The question is only how to best frame it with the real world.
