County Fair and Rodeo

Labor Day weekend is the last weekend for the Evergreen State Fair (a county fair, in spite of the name) and the weekend for the local rodeo. Since none of us had ever been to a rodeo, we had to go.

There was bronco riding, calf roping and mutton riding. Since the rodeo is inside and and in the evening with modet lighting, I was limited in the shots I could get. the broncos were much too fast to make a decent image. But the women roping the calves were doable.

This was a very humane event. The ropes were not connected to the rider or the rider's saddle. This means that once lassoed, the end of the rope simple sides along the ground after the calf. The only point is to lasso the animal. In the shot below, once the rider missed the calf, the horse (on command I presume) stops abruptly.

In this photo, the horse is standing on one foot, the other three are off the ground.

Seamus and Seth were also watching closely.

I thought I should show you a successful calf roping.

There was also an event for the children, mutton riding. A child must be 4 yrs or more old and weigh less than 55 pounds to be allowed to ride. the young lady below was one of the only ones to have a good long ride.

After the rodeo, we stopped at the petting zoo and Seamus feed the animals.

Here, Elizabeth feeds while Seamus watches.

As Seamus was growing tired, as were we, we found the sun had set and the lights of the carnival were on.

Surprisingly for a Saturday night, the crowd was sparse and business was light for this food concession.

A fun night out for everyone. Although, I need to pick a rodeo next year that is outside in the daytime so I have enough light to get some better photos.
