Low Tide in Edmonds

On July 3rd we had an exceptionally low tide in Puget Sound so Seth and I loaded up Seamus for a visit to the wonders of walking where the sea normally lives.

A couple things to note in the photo above. First, the tide s really far out. Secondly, Seamus is wearing a coat and long pants on July 3rd. Welcome to the PWN!

Here we see Seamus and Seth trying to flush out a clam that is buried in the sand. It did not work. The clam can dig fast than Seth can.

There is evidence to be found on the ground that large clams do indeed exist in these waters.

Edmonds is where the ferry from Kingston arrives. The water is so low that we are walking on the bottom of the bay underneath the pier where the ferry docks. At the end where the ferry ies up, the bay is dredged enough to permit the ferry service even under these conditions.

If you look closely at the bottom of some of the posts, you'll see starfish.

There are really large starfish to be found on the sides of some of the posts. There is also another creature down at the ground level whose name I do not know. This black band-like fellow is pretty common here abouts.

Seamus investigating some seaweed.

Here's a view of the docked ferry out at the end of the pier.

In addition to the starfish, there are anemone to be seen as well.

This is, I believe, a chiton.

And this is a Seamus.

I'll end with a couple vies of the shoreline and the sound so you can see just low the water is.

This last image is looking back toward the pier and you see how really low the water is today. Nearly all the pier pylons are submerged on a normal day.

You'll also notice that folks, in a perfectly PWN kinda way, have brought chairs and blankets to enjoy a day in the clouds along a beach that smells of exposed seaweed and mud.
