Rockport State Park

The state of Washington is littered with small (and large) state parks. For about $30 a year pass to all of them can be had. So I renewed our pass and headed up the road about an hour to the small town of Rockport. Located here is a modest sized stand of old growth forest.

In addition to the home of the epiphyte that grows in the longest strands of any such planty thing (I forget the name of it), there are more common things such as these mushrooms.

But my walk about the trail was filled with mossy trees. Standing trees, fallen trees, and those in between are all covered in moss.

There is a sense in which the moss helps brings a little smidge of order to the chaos of decay. At least the limbs all have a kind of uniformity of look and texture.

Some, like these limbs appear to be weighed down by the excess of moss growing on them. Aching under the added burden, the limbs seem to arch over and give up. Headed back to the ground for some relief from the strain.
