The Willamette River
We signed on to a half-day tour of Portland to get a feel for the place. Our first stop was by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) on the banks of the Willamette River. While there was no time to visit the large, modern museum (we will certainly need to return for an extended visit), we did get to walk down to the river to see the city and a few of the many bridges.
The museum has a nuclear powered submarine (well, I assume the nuclear material is gone, eh?) moored in the river for people to visit. We're told that you can book a night in the vessel. Kid's nights are all fun and games. Adult sleepovers include alcohol.
A fire boat came out to put on a show for us under the Tilikum Crossing. This is the largest car-free bridge in the US. It carries trams, buses, walkers, and cyclicist...but no cars.
