Leaping Lizards and Frigatebirds

After leaving Isabels Island and going back to Santa Cristóbal Island, we had one more day of exploration. This involved a boat ride to North Seymour Island. Here, we got to see a jumping lava lizard and lots of frigatebirds.

All of these are great frigatebirds. Sadly, we did not see any magnificent frigate birds. At least I think we did. The only difference other than a small (about 2 inches) difference in wing span is the color on the back. The male magnificent's black plumage sparkle with a purplish sheen, while the great frigate's shimmers with a greenish shade.

We had the good fortune to visit during nesting season. The males all had there gular sacs on full display. These large neck pouches are a brilliant red as a mating display and quite impressive when inflated fully.

As you see below, the female seems drab by comparison on the head and body.

When in flight, these birds really are a sight to see.
