We've been off to Oregon for Memorial Day weekend to do a spot of pet sitting for two energetic kitties. While here, we've done a bit of exploring about. One of our first outings was a drive up the Columbia River to see the Bonneville Dam, its associate power generating station and various fish ladders and bypasses.
While there is a system of chutes and ladders for getting the salmon around the dam, one of the more impressive schemes is to simple let the fish got through the sluices. We're told this is a pretty low risk to the fish in spite of the great roar and mist created by this mass of water moving so quickly.
No more than a couple percent of the fish are killed by passing through this way. This stay open now through the summer to pass the fish back to the ocean
I found this misty structure to be captivating and in monochrome with low hanging clouds it is quite ominous.
