It usually the case that in smaller cemeteries, the statuary is molded cement. The icon above is an exception. This marble statue of an angel is nicely done. While it is not on par with many of the statues to be seen in Europe, it is a very nice addition to this city cemetery.
This gravestone is especially heartbreaking. It is hard to tell without further research if the stone was erected later or if names were added as people passed. However, the names of the children strongly suggest they all were lost in infancy since there are neither dates nor full names given. Perhaps they were older and all lost in wave of disease. In any event, it is a case of hard lives lived in the valley.
On a brisk winter's day, color is typically muted. However, the bright, clear blue sky and the strong orange lichen on the markers stand out agains the bare tries and dormant grass.
As you can see below, Mr. John J. Cupp was born while Napoleon, Shelley, and Byron were still alive. There is a fair chance that he never knew who they were.
