Along the Shore Near Tillamook

After venturing east to see a little of the Columbia River, we next turned west to the Pacific Ocean. Our intention was to go to Cannon Beach. But the entire rest of Portland made the same decision. When we got within about 10-15 miles of our destination, we hit a line a traffic that extended as far as we could see.

It turns out that there was a side road just ahead of us and we used it to re-route ourselves toward Tillamook. This took us through the beautiful Tillamook State Forest to a section of the coastline without many people at all.

While it appears that we missed the pretty beaches, a bit farther north we found the vista shown below.

Lots of rocks stand just off shore. And these rocks nearly all had a covering of (largely invisible here) gulls and other sea birds.

It is comforting to know that the Pacific is pretty darned blue on the eastern side just like it is in Australia.

These scenes, although covered with different vegetation, are quite reminiscent of many places we saw in Australia. Perhaps, if you can't afford the time and money for a trip to Melbourne just now, a visit to the Oregon coast can give you a temporary fix.

And just to answer that question that some of you make we thinking just now, Tillamook cheese and yogurt is indeed made in the town of Tillamook.
