University of South Carolina

Columbia is a place with lots of memories for our family. Most of you gentle readers know that I was once on the faculty here at USC. Elizabeth earned here Masters degree in Library Science here. And, just across the Congaree river in Lexington, Anna was born. We had to stop and just have a look about.

Things have really changed since we left this town. Now we have a family that extends two more generations.

A the end of the Horseshoe (or the 'Quad' as many places call the central square of campus, stand the 'old' library. Not the original one, mind you. That is the South Caroliniana Library that houses the sort of Library of Congress for South Carolina and has been continuously a library building longer than any other in the US.

Under these spreading live oaks we find benches for students and faculty to stop a few minutes between classes for a rest and to collect their thoughts.

We also find two children who still think that every smile must be a forced one.
