Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery

Now that it finally beginning to act like spring time (since summer is almost upon us), we've had enough sunshine and lack of rain to make a trip into a grassy cemetery possible. Quite a different experience from such visits in Australia. There, the burial fields seldom have much grass or rain. Here, everywhere is a lawn, well manicured and cared for.

It was clear that only part of the cemetery was used for Civil War soldiers...there were many much more recent burials to be seen. Surprisingly (to us, at least), there were very few examples of cemetery art to be seen.

There was a massive tree in a central section that provided shade and dappled sunlight over a broad area. It was a peaceful place even if we weren't far enough from the main roads to avoid the road noise. Here, it was a white-noise background that was soon felt rather than heard.

As you can see, the stone covering of the grave is in all cases covered with moss/lichen. Burial in a rainy place results in a biochemically complex eternity.
